What is a merv rating?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It’s basically how efficient the filter is at trapping particulates. The higher the number, the higher the filtration capability/amount of particles captured.
MERV 8. This is the best value filter in most cases, this option catches small particulate matter.
MERV 11. This option is best for catching even smaller particles including mold spores and fine dust.
MERV 13. The highest efficiency filter we offer. It is used to catch bacteria and smoke particles. These filters are typically used in medical buildings such as hospitals.
Odor eliminators: We do offer an odor eliminator filter! This is typically a MERV 8 pleated filter infused with activated carbon to eliminate odors. Please contact us for pricing!
is the highest effeciency filter better for my house?
Not necessarily! Depending on the design of your HVAC system a filter that restricts airflow beyond its static design can cause significant problems. In most systems an airflow restricted indoor evaporator coil can cause limited heat transfer and potentially cause liquid refrigerant to be sent back to the outdoor compressor causing an issue called slugging. This liquid causes the oil to be removed from the compressor and increased wear and tear.
Restricted airflow can cause wear and tear on indoor blower motors as well as significant efficiency loss.
Most systems that use high efficiency filters must be designed for them. In most cases we recommend a MERV 8 or 11 air filter. However, we are happy to help you assess the best filters needed for your system!
